Geo Location Database Quick Guide

The Geo Location Database (Geo DB for short) is a Deluxe feature. The Geo DB is very useful when trying to search for place information that is current. The three million world-wide locations in the database are those that are in existence today. This quick guide is not meant to replace the Help file information about the Geo DB

The Geo DB is very useful for determining what county a US city is in. It is also very help for determining correct spellings and longitude and latitude. It can also do a radius search for nearby locations.  As you use the Geo DB keep the follow points in mind:

1. It doesn't contain information about locations no longer in existence because of name or boundary changes.  For example, the Geo DB won’t find "Dry Diggings" or "Hangtown" which are historic names for the city of Placerville, California. In addition, the Geo DB won't find the village "Oleszyce" in Galicia, Austria because it is now in Poland (Galicia ceased to exist in 1918). Only current locations can be located.
2. The Geo DB is very US geocentric. Although it covers the entire world, it does not show all geographical levels. For example, the counties and municipal districts of Canada's provinces are not included. "Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario, Canada" is in the Geo DB as "Kingston, , Ontario, Canada" etc.
3. The Geo DB cannot be edited or updated.
4. Don't confuse the Geo DB with Legacy's Mapping feature or the US County Verifier. They are separate, although related, features.

• How to Find What County that a US City is in

1. Enter what you know about the location in the Individual's Information screen. Make sure to enter a place-holder comma for the missing county name and then click the  Geo DB button. (For additional information see Locations and the Use of Commas.)

2. The Geo DB will find the complete location, with the state spelled out and the longitude and latitude in the lower right.  Click the Select button.

3. When we started (see step 1) we entered "Benton, , MI", which was added to the Master Location List.  Now we need to merge "Benton, , MI" into the full location name. The latitude and longitude will also be included. Click the Save button.

4. You are done. "Benton, Washtenaw, Michigan, United States" now appears in the Individual's Information screen.

• Using Search Modifiers to Find the Correct Spelling of a Location

1. To reach the Geo Location Database Search screen, choose Location Database from the Tools tab of the Ribbon bar on the main Legacy screen (this is another way to open it).

2. Spell the location the best you can. Use Sound Like, Skip the Field and other search modifiers to broaden how Legacy looks for the correct spelling and click Search.

3. Highlight the correct location and click Select to add it to the Master Location List.

• How to Do a Radius Search

1. Sometimes you need to search the records of nearby locations to find complete information about your ancestors.  Open the Geo DB and enter the location.

2. First click the Radius Search button in the lower right, second enter the number of miles (or kilometers) the search is to encompass and third click the OK button.

3. The Geo DB screen will display all locations found within the radius specified.

• Not Enough Information

1. Sometimes when doing a search, more than one location with the same name will be found.  You will need to do more research to find the correct one.
