1)  Go to File > Export > Export to a New Legacy Family File   (In versions prior to Legacythis will be File > Export to > Legacy File)

2)  Give the file you will export to a new name and click Save.

3)  The Export screen will open. Leave everything at the defaults.  Click on the Privacy Options button on the right side.  If you have anybody in your file marked as Private or Invisible, or if you have used Privacy Brackets [[ ]] anywhere in your file, you will need to check mark everything under the Override Private Settings so that everything will export.  Do NOT check mark anything in the first section (Suppression section).  Click Save.  Now click the large Start the Export button. If you get a message about sources, click Don't Assign a Source.

4)  Legacy will ask if you want to open the new file, say Yes.  See if the error is gone in this file.  If so, delete your old file and use this one.

If this does not work then you will need to export your file to a gedcom file and then re-import it.  Be aware that if you export  as gedcom and then re-import the gedcom back into Legacy all of your SourceWriter sources will be converted to Basic Style sources.  The gedcom transfer protocol does not allow for sources created using templates.  All of your sources will be exported but in a different format.  Also, all of your modified dates will be changed to the current date.

1) Go to File > Export > GEDCOM File (in versions prior to Legacy 8 this will be File > Export To > GEDCOM File)

2)  Leave everything at the defaults.  Make sure that All Records in the Entire Family File is displaying at the bottom.  If not, Click Record Selection and select All Records in the Entire Family File. Click Save.  Now click the large Select File Name and START EXPORT button. Chose a name and then click Save.  A Compiler Information box will pop up.  You can leave that blank and then click OK. If you get a message about sources, click Don't Assign a Source.  After the export is complete, click OK.

3) Now to go File > Import > GEDCOM File (in versions prior to Legacy 8 this will be File > Import From > GEDCOM File)

4) Select the gedcom file that you just created and click Open.  Chose Create a NEW Family File and add the GEDCOM information to it (recommended) then Proceed.  Give your file and new name and click Open.  You might get a dialog box that says that One or more unrecognized items have been found in the GEDCOM file.   If you click Yes you will have the opportunity to tell Legacy where you want this information to go. On this screen is a Help button which you can click for more information. If you click No you will still have the opportunity to Put unrecognized items into the notes field.   Normally you will leave everything on this screen at the defaults since it is your own file you are importing. Now click Start the Import.  You might get a warning box for bad dates.  If you do, select Turn off Date Validation.then OK.  You can go turn it back on later by going to Options > Customize > 5. Dates > Option 5.5 Date Checking (gbl).  If you do get this box you will want to look for any bad dates on the Potential Problems Report once you get your new file up and running.  You will get an Import Complete box, click OK.  You might get a View Log File?  dialog box.  Go ahead and say Yes and you will be able to see any problems with the import.  You can save this file for later or print it if you want to.

5) The Error 381 should be gone.
