Copy and Paste Problems

Copy and Paste Problems

There is not any one cause of copy and paste problems.

• There are instances where closing and reopening Legacy fixed the problem.


• Some users are not able to copy and paste using
Internet Explorer, but when they use Google Chrome they are able to copy and paste. Take a look at the Microsoft article "Cannot Drag or Copy and Paste File" at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309662.

This seems to happen most often when CTRL-A and CTRL-V are used. To get around it highlight the text, right-click and then select Copy from the popup menu. To paste, place the cursor where you want it and then right-click and select Paste from the popup menu.

• When doing a copy and paste into a small field that is just a single line tall, sometimes it is helpful to use an intermediate program like Notepad to make sure that you are not inadvertently including invisible carriage returns when copying, which will cause problems when you paste.

• Some copy and paste problems are connected to malware infections that have damaged the registry.

• There are parts of Legacy where paste is not appropriate for data entry and those areas will not recognize the CTRL-V paste command. Copy and Paste should always work in Notes, Comments and other free-form text fields but will not work where the value in a field is drawn from an associated table.

• Sometimes there are custom user settings that can cause a screen not to work right, including cut and paste, or copy and paste.

  1.  Please click on Options on the menu bar and select Customize. Next, click the Reset to Defaults button at the bottom of the screen, confirm the reset and then Save. Often this is all that you need to do to fix the cut and paste problem. You will, however, loose some customized settings, such as screen colors and personalized font settings. These things will have to be reset.
  2. If step 1 did not fix the problem, please close Legacy and delete the following .usr files:

    LEGACY: Open your Documents folder and browse into Legacy Family Tree\ _AppData\Usr and delete the Legacy2.usr, Legacy5.usr, Legacy6.usr, Legacy7.usr Legacy8.usr, and Legacy9.usr files (make sure you do not delete plain Legacy.usr). There is no family data in any of these files, so deleting them does not delete your data. Upon start up, Legacy will recreate the files to their default settings.

    LEGACY 7.5 OR EARLIER: Browse into C:\Legacy folder on your hard drive and delete the Legacy2.usr, Legacy5.usr, Legacy6.usr, Legacy7.usr and Legacy8.usr files (make sure you do not delete plain Legacy.usr). There is no family data in any of these files, so deleting them does not delete your data. Upon start up, Legacy will recreate the files to their default settings.

    These files contain user settings to customized background colors, screen fonts, window sizes, startup family, report settings, as well as file locations, etc. There is no family data in any of these files, so deleting them does not delete your data.
  3. Please click on File on the menu bar and select File Maintenance > Check/Repair and proceed with the repair. If any error messages occur during the Check/Repair process, click No in the error message box so that the repair steps can finish.  Do Check/Repair twice if errors are found. If the program works, you can stop here.
