Error: "Cannot lock file"

Try copying the family file to a new location and see if Legacy can open it.

If this does not work, make sure your family file is saved to C:\Legacy\Data (fol Legacy 7.5 or earlier) or [Documents]\Legacy Family Tree\Data (for Legacy). Under certain circumstances, you can get the “cannot lock file” error if your family file is saved on a network drive or an external drive or a CD.

With Legacy closed, browse to the family file, right click on it and select Rename. Give the file a different name. Open Legacy and try the file again.

If you have Legacy on Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 set the User Account Control (UAC) to Never Notify. With Legacy closed, click the Start button in the lower left corner of your Desktop screen. Next type UAC in the “Search programs and files” field and then click Change User Account Control settings at the top of the search results list. In the User Account Control Settings screen move the slider bar to Never Notify at the bottom; then click OK and allow the change.

If you have Legacy 7.5 or earlier on Windows Vista experiment with the UAC setting. Try first turning it On; then Off. Use the setting that works for you.  See http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00897 for more information.
